Respectable Sins Reading Challenge

Posted on Friday, June 13, 2008 at 12:29 PM by David Zavadil

I have not faired so well in my quest to read a Puritan a month. Bunyan put me behind and I have been fighting the schedule ever since. I have been wanting to read Having purchased the book recently, I have decided to read this and discuss it with you the readers of this blog. If you have a copy, great, if not, purchase one by clicking the link above or at your local book store and then begin reading Chapter One. I will post some notes and my thoughts on the chapter on Monday June 23, 2008. We will read one chapter a week and then discuss the chapter on the following Monday. Chapter One on the 23rd, Chapter Two on the 30th, Chapter 3 on the 7th and so on. There will not be a post on July 21, 2008 as I will be in Ireland and may not have access to the internet. Post a comment and let me know if you will be joining me in this challenge.

I have restored the comments on this blog. It is a new account so all of the previous comments, including the spam have been deleted. I plan on writing more and moderating the comments tighter. I pray that at some time this site will be used by people around the world for edification and growth.

Update and some fun

Posted on Monday, May 05, 2008 at 3:25 PM by David Zavadil

I looked up and the entire month of April had disappeared. It has been ages since my last post. I have had such good intentions, but have just not been able to get things done. In April we hosted our Annual Mission's Conference. Dr. Elias Medieros, RTS , was our Keynote speaker. It was fantastic. The messages can be found on the EPC website.

About a week after my last post, I was called by the doctor's office. My liver enzymes were abnormally high. I went in for some additional blood work and found the pancreatic levels were high too. The doctor was amazed though, as I had not symptoms with all the markers pointing toward pancreatitis. After 5 weeks of blood work and an ultrasound of my insides, my levels are back down near normal and still no symptoms. The whole thing was wierd, but kept me pretty self focused for a few weeks.

My family are big Alabama football fans. #1 son will be attending the Capstone in the fall, with aspirations of writing or broadcasting AL football. One song that means much to us is "Sweet Home Alabama." The Jolly Blogger pointed me toward this exciting, yet strange rendition of the Skynard favorite.

Here are few sites worthy of checking out

The Puritan Library  Just what it says, a library of puritan works. most are in pdf format.

The Bible Centre  An online Library. A great resource for students and preachers on a limited budget. There is an annual fee to be able to access the library. It is well worth the price. ($20).

UnVeilinGlory The teaching ministry of some very old friends of mine (They are not old, I have just known them since 1981). They are based out of Richmond, Virginia. Check out their seminars entitled "Cat and Dog Theology."

Lyrical Theology This is the personal blog of Shai Linne. Shai is a Reformed Hip Hop artist. His new CD, "Atonement" has just been released. Check out this blog to read the lyrics and see what "Reformed Hip Hop" looks like. You can listen to samples on ITunes, just search for "Atonement" or Shai Linne.

The Puritan Challenge

Posted on Monday, January 07, 2008 at 10:41 AM by David Zavadil

It seems I was not the only one who felt called to the challenge of reading a puritan a month. The Puritan Reading Challenge has a plan for the monthly readings. I will be adapting, slightly, the list of readings as there are a few on the list I have already read. In the next day or two I will post my reading list for year. Won't you join me on this quest?

A Puritan a Month

Posted on Wednesday, January 02, 2008 at 3:24 PM by David Zavadil

Thinking about the past year and about the coming year, I came to the conclusion that I have not been reading enough. This hurts my preaching and teaching and those who read or hear me. To combat this lack of reading I have resolved to increase my reading volume. One of the ways I am going to do this is by reading a Puritan a Month. I would like to invite you to join me on this adventure. during January I will be reading Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners by John Bunyon. I plan to purchase a copy of each book but will also make sure that there is an ecopy of each book so that those who may not have access to these books can still join us in reading. Leave me some comments with suggestions for February.

I will be reposting some studies on Psalm 119. I began this study about two years ago and never finished due to a move and ministry transition. I will bring us up to date with the perevious posts and then continue to move us forward in this study.

The Ten Commandments Redux

Posted on Sunday, October 21, 2007 at 8:02 AM by David Zavadil

Last night my wife, daughter and I joined a couple from EPC in seeing the new animated movie, "The Ten Commandments." I had heard some decent pre-release reviews and was looking forward to seeing the movie. I am glad I didn't set my hopes too high.

While the story was good, you can't beat the story of Moses for a good story line, the animation and voice overs left a lot to be desired. When the movie began I had this odd feeling that I was watching an old Godzilla movie redone with Claymation on steroids. The computer animation had a cleanness to it, though with odd shaped features and mouths out of sinc with the dialogue. The backgrounds seemed over done and often awkward. Moses and Ramses must have worked out on the stairclimber for hours to develop the calves they had.

I guess you can tell, I was not too impressed with the animation. As I said earlier, the story line was great. The actor's voice overs, however, did little to move you. Many times during the movie, Christian Slater and Alfred Molina came across as teenagers reading a play in English class. This "acting" left the whole movie stale. When all was said and done, the dozen or so people in the theater, yawned a big yawn and left in search of some ice cream. This movie saddened me. One of the greatest stories ever told was reduced to second rate animation and made so vanilla that I would be afraid to tell someone to go and see it.

I give the movie a 1 out of 5. Wait for the movie to show on Network TV next Easter, at least then it won't cost you anything.
