    Sunday School Alternatives?

Posted on Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at 2:46 PM by David Zavadil

I have not met anyone, recently, that is thrilled with their Sunday School program. When asked why they have a Sunday School program in the first place the answer is usually something like, "Well.... that is what we have always done." A brilliant answer if you are content on not getting anything productive accomplished. I always get up on my right side. Not necessarily startling information, especially since it is the only way out of the bed, unless I climb over the wife. The "Always done..." excuse is just that, an excuse for not having sat down long enough to think through the reasons for doing something. I am sick of that excuse and so want us to stop and think about this for a moment. Why do we have Sunday School? What purpose does it serve in advancing the Kingdom? How is it or has it built of the body of Christ in our local community? What alternatives are there to Sunday School?

How can we deal with an issue if we do not question it a bit? I love teaching, I love proclaiming God's Word whenever I get the chance. I am just wondering if Sunday School is the best medium for that teaching and proclamation. What are some alternatives? Small groups during the week? Small groups on Sunday AM? Internet Studies? You tell me.
